Matthew Segarra Mr. Thomas English 11 21 October 2013 C. This was a confusing and questionable poem. It was a very difficult language to understand, most of which I did not. I was not quite sure but this poem must be about freedom. Is Wheatley telling Washington that he should not give up for his fight for freedom? Who is the goddess?
D. Even though I did not really understand the language in this poem, it sounded like a very motivating poem and I liked it. The poem sounds like it was made to motivate someone to keep on fighting for what they believe in. I also think this poem shows us what the colonies went through to break away from Britain and be free. I liked this quote, “The land of freedom’s heaven-defended race!” This quote is biased towards America, saying God was on our side. Wheatley is using this line to motivate Washington to keep on pushing.
I. Evan O’Donell helped me grasp the overall concept of the poem. I was dumbfounded when Wheatley was talking about Columbia. I thought the representation of our country was a bald eagle. I would have thought Columbia was just another person if Evan did not mention this. The poem made that much more sense after the true identity of Columbia was revealed.
