Connor Ryan Mr. Thomas English 11 9/12/13 A. The line in Edward Taylor’s poem that that I feel relates to me and most people is “then clothe therewith mine Understanding, Will, Affections, Judgment, Conscience, Memory, My Words, and Actions, that their shame may fill My ways with glory and thee Glorify” (line 13-15). Edward is asking God to give him these characteristics. I relate to this line the most because before a big test or a big game I ask God to help me overcome the obstacles I am about to face. D. My favorite line in the poem is when Edward says, “Then dye the same in heavenly Colors Choice, All pinked with Varnished Flowers of Paradise” (11-12). These lines mean that heaven is decorated and embellished. Edward is explaining to us what heaven looks like to him. I enjoyed these lines because it shows how beautiful heaven could be. C. This was a good poem but it was also extremely confusing. I did not understand most of it. The lines I did not understand the most were “make me, o lord, thy Spinning Wheel complete. Thy Holy Word my Distaff make for me. Make mine Affections thy Swift Flyers neat And make my Soul thy holy Spool to be” (1-4). I did not understand the language he uses. Also throughout the poem Edward capitalizes make word that should not be capitalizes. I was not sure if there was any major reason as why he would do that.

Matthew Segarra Mr. Thomas English 11 15 September 2013 A. “Then clothe therewith mine Understanding, Will, Affections, Judgment, Conscience, Memory, My Words, and Actions” (Lines 13-14). I relate to this quote because most of my decisions and actions are influenced by outside sources. More often than not I turn to people that have been through the situation I am in and I seek their advice. In a sense, they “clothe” my understanding and judgment. D. Out of all the lines in this poem, the one quote that struck me as outstanding was this one, “Make me, O Lord, thy Spinning Wheel complete”(Line 1). I liked this because it shows the extent of the author’s dedication to God. He shows us that he is willing to give himself up to God and that he can do whatever he wants with him. I also like how he compares himself to a Spinning Wheel, it shows that he sees himself as one of God’s important tools and that God has not yet finished sculpting his life. I. Replying to John Morano in his response to D. I agree with him because I had a difficult time understanding some of the language of this poem. The meanings of the metaphors were hard to decipher but after reading a few times I realized what the author was trying to say. I feel like even back then people had difficulty understanding the language of this poem.

Marvin Etienne Mr. Thomas English 11 12 September 2013 Edward Taylor: Huswifery D. Although this poem was very confusing, there was a line that I liked. "Then weave the Web thyselfe. The yarn is fine." This quote shows that Edward wants God to have control on his life and to play a part in his decisions. When he says the "yarn is fine" I think he is implying that what he has to offer to God if positive and that he puts his faith in him. “That I am Clothed in Holy Robes for glory" also implies that the yarn he offers will prepare him to be judged by God. A. I can relate to this poem in a way because it is kind of like a prayer. He is basically asking God for help, just as we all do when we pray. He has a desire to have God play a role in his life and to ensure that he is thoroughly prepared to meet Him. E. I do not completely agree with this poem by Taylor. God does play a vital role in our lives, but he do have free will and action that define the "Holy Robes" we are to be clothed in. Our actions and decisions are the yarn and we determine wether our yarn will be suitable or not. Taylor is saying that he wants God to determine how he is to live his life, yet, he has the power to choose that for himself.

a. THis poem reminds me of my great grandmother because when she was alive and young she use to tell us stories about how when they lived in italy her mom use to sow by the fire at night. Also my great grandmother is very religious. " make mine affections thy swift flyers neat and make my soul thy holy spool to be" ( line 3-4). Made me think of her because she was always talking about how you present your self to jesus and others around you. That I would need to remain holly and strong.
b. The significance of this reading was comparing God to a house wife. He is always there helping you with her at home life and when you leave your house she gonna stay there and wait for you. You may stray from your house and do something stupid but you will always come back home where your wife is waiting "god" and she will take you in with open arms. Also " then weave the web thyself, the yarn is fine" describes how you have to make a relationship with him or you wont grow towards him.
f. The relationship between god and a house wife is a strange and complex one. " make me, o lord, thy spinning wheel complete." (line 1) displays the this house wife maken her work the same as his. Make her lives work (what she makes with her spinning wheel) something great and take control of this for her. The comparison is that they are loving and will care for you.

A. Jonathan Edwards reminds me of a group of people known as the Westboro Baptist Church. They have a very radical viewpoint that a vast majority of people are against. The protest at soldier’s funerals and gay rights movements. They have made a name for themselves by being complete and total jerks and making everyone hate them. The things that Edwards writes just makes me so pissed because he thinks the world works that way. An example of this is, “they have deserved the fiery pit, and are already sentenced to it.” C. How is it that someone can be so ignorant towards the world? For some reason he feels that mankind is doomed to eternal damnation in the fiery pits of Hell and it doesn’t make any sense why someone would think that. What happened to free will? What happened to the ability to change your fate? He speaks of men being evil and although there are evil men in the world there are just as many if not more good people who do the right thing in the world. E. My reaction to this whole writing was that it was full of nonsense. He keeps spouting out that God “abhors” us all and wants to send us all to Hell. This also angers me so much because when people are so ignorant about things it pisses me off. My blood boils when people run their mouth and they don’t know what they’re talking about, especially when they go after people in what they say.
