Eoin Tunney Mr. Thomas English 11 7 October 2013
E. From these few pages we had to read, my perception of Mary Warren has totally changed. At first I though Mary Warren was just like the other girls pretending. But now I realize that she is very gullible. I realized this when Mary said “You’re the Devil’s man!” This astonished me because she fell into Abigail’s little trick. Its crazy how Abigail can control a person like she did with Mary Warren. Mary Warren turned on Proctor extremely quick, which makes me wonder if this whole thing was planned out between Abigail and Mary.
D. In these pages, there were a few things that made me respect Proctor even more than I did before. On page 1259, Proctor starts calling Abigail a whore when he begins to admit that he did commit adultery with her. Proctor goes onto say “I have known her, sir. I have known her.” This is where he admits he did commit adultery. I felt this was a very brave act to save his wife, but it actually caused more harm when his wife tried to keep her husbands reputation. I don’t think many men would have admitted this, so this made me respect Proctor more.
B. When Abigail started going on about how there was a bird about to attack her, I felt the whole mood of the scene changed. It started off being serious with Proctor admitting he committed adultery, but then Abigail starts screaming and saying Mary Warren has changed into a bird who is about to attack her. By saying this, Abigail got Mary Warren to fall into her trick. Without this I felt these pages wouldn’t have been as interesting as they were.

E. The scene where Mary Warren is accusing the girls of faking the whole thing really stood out to me because of how Abigail turns the situation to her favor. After Mary says that it was all an act Abigail glares at Mary and makes it seem like she is witching Abigail. By doing this she manipulates the judges to work in her favor by once again acting like she is being attacked by a spirit that Mary sent out. This scene shows just how manipulative Abigail is and how easy it actually is to manipulate the people of the court and the judges. This just in general makes me hate Abigail even more because of how selfish and evil she can be in order to get her way.
D. A quote that I enjoyed was when John was accusing Abigail of lying and of being a whore who wanted to be with him. “She thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is promise in such sweat. But it is a whore’s vengeance, and you must see it; I set myself entirely in your hands.” (1259) I really enjoyed this quote because it shows that John really loves his wife because he is admitting to having lusted for someone other than his wife and that he is truly repented for his actions. It also shows that he will do anything to save his wife and dismantle Abigail’s control over Salem.
B. I thought it was significant that Proctor and Giles Corey were sent to jail because it shows just how easily the girls and Abby can manipulate the people of the court and it really is scary to think people of power can be so easily manipulated by children. I also thought it was important when Proctor said that the court is pulling down heaven and bringing up a whore (1262) because he is saying that they are not even doing God’s will anymore, but are actually doing the will of Abby and the girls. I also thought it was significant when Hale quits the court which made me like him more because he has also realized that the witchcraft trials have no basis and are in fact run by the girls and not the judges.

Sean de los Santos Mr. Thomas English 11 7 October 2013
Crucible act 3 discussion
H. If I were going to make this part of the reading a movie, I would make it very comedic and I would make it a parody. I would have all of the people in the court wearing funny puritan clothes and some of them would even have their goats with them. Some would be playing silly games and some would be randomly beating each other up for dumb reasons like the Yankee games. I would make judge Danforth Samuel Jackson because that makes the movie hysterical due to his very funny way of acting. I would make Mary Warren Rebel Wilson due to Wilson’s hysterical way of acting. I would finally make Proctor Rob Schneider because Rob is usually put in situations like this.
F. In this part of the Crucible, Abigail has a huge influence over the girls in the Jury during the duration of the court scene. She was able to get the girls to act along when she tells the judge that, “She is coming down! (1262)” and all of the girls follow her as the imaginary bird comes down from the beam of the church. She is able to manipulate everyone to her advantage and this is something she can use to smite some people.
E. One of the craziest things that happened in this play was when John Proctor finally gave up and went with the lie that he was with the devil. He tells the court that, “A fire is burning! I hear the boot of Lucifer, I see his filthy face (1262)!” This is kind of insane due to the fact he was trying to let the people know that the devil wasn’t real. The fact he finally went with this lie that witchcraft was real blew my mind. He must've lost his faith in all of Salem since Mary went with it as well.

George Baroudos Mr. Thomas English 11 7 October 2013
I – Our class discussion of that obliviousness everyone seems to have obtained is frustrating. The whole scenario with the bird seems to come right as they close in on Abigail. Danforth is mesmerized by the pleas and it also speaks to Abigail’s consistency and her ability to manipulate which we have mentioned. Abigail does possess the talent of quick thinking and the ability to act, but the fact that this is all a fraud and the majority of people are blind to it is frustrating. We know the general outcome, we know that people will die, but the fact that they don’t is bothersome.
A – Fooling someone is a sign of disrespect in my opinion. Sibling rivalry often involves fooling your parents into believe something that is not true. My brother has fooled my parents on various occasions. Taking the easy way out often tempts us, but we must take the higher road. My brother once told my mom that I forced him to jump off a shed. I never did this but my mother was oblivious. With that being said he ultimately fooled her and left me in a to of trouble.
D – Hale is forming into a character that is worth liking. “I quit this court!” (1262) shows that Hale is not afraid to stand down. Hale ultimately stands up for what is right. Hale comes to grips with all the nonsense that is going on and does not give in like the rest. Hale voices his opinion; he refuses to partake in something he does not believe in. The only guarantees in life are death and our opinion. We formulate this through assessment and experience. It is wrong to put down someone’s opinion, we can disagree but everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion.

Danny O’Keefe Mr. Thomas English 11 10/7/13 B. I think that the way that Abigail and the other girls act impacts the story allot. It changes the mood of the scene and makes it even more difficult for Proctor and other people to fight against the accusations made. I feel like a lot of people actually don’t believe anything they are now trying to get what they want or to keep their reputation. And by Abigail and the other girls lying it makes it easier for them and other people like Parris and Putnam to continue to get what they want. D. Part of the story that stood out to me was when Proctor says that he had an affair with Abigail. I think that by him coming out and saying this shows that he really wants this all to end, that he will go to any extent to save his wife and the other people that were accused. Also by saying this people are now getting a better idea about what is actually going on. E. I thought that my view of Mary Warren was changing from bad to good when she was standing up for Elizabeth about the doll and how she was saying that Abigail and the other girls are all lying. Then my view on her went back to bad when she joined the girls in their lying. I started to like her and thought that she was one of the few decent characters, but I was wrong.

Michael Adams Crucible Pages 1257-1262
C. When I was done with this, I was wondering why Proctor was telling that he saw the devil and that Dansforth was also helping the devil. I was also wondering why Dansforth did not deny this and that he only yelled for Mr. Hale to come back. I thought that this was a weird turn of events for this to happen because Proctor was trying to get his wife and Mary free.
E. What I thought was really creepy was when all the girls except Mary were repeating what Mary said and that they believed that Mary has turned into a bird. What I also thought was kind of creepy was that all of a sudden, Mary accuses John Proctor of being the Devil's helper and controlling all of the women. It is also weird that John did not deny it and that John also accused Dansforth of being a devil's helper to, and Dansforth did not deny it.
D. One line that I really liked is "But in my sickness--you see, sir. I were a long time sick after my last baby, and I thought I say my husband somewhat turning from me. And this girl--" (Page 1260). What I really liked about this phrase was Elizabeth Proctor said that she was to be blamed for everything just to protect her husband. I also thought this was a funny phrase because later, John Proctor tells Mary to tell the truth in the court when she is being mimicked and yelled out to release the demons out of the girls that are mimicking her, and Elizabeth did not tell the truth.

Marvin Etienne Mr. Thomas English 11 7 October 2013 The Crucible A. From these pages, I can see that Abigail is really manipulative and her actions are directly effected by the other character's actions. For example, she pretends to get a shiver from a cold wind she tells the judge is coming from Mary Warren. This does not improve Mary's image and people are going to start questioning her statements and accusations against Abigail. Also, I'm starting to see a different side of Proctor. He is becoming more assertive and he is voicing his opinion. He called Abigail a whore and says she wants to take over his life and get his wife killed. E. I found it interesting how Mary fell into Abigail's trap. Abigail claims that she is being harmed by an entity sent from Mary Warren. This catches Mary off guard and she is scared. I think that is why she calls Proctor the "Devil's man." When she says this, it does not go well for Proctor, as he is locked up along with Giles. I. I think that it is a possibility that Danforth and the judge know that the girls are lying, but they do not want to admit being fooled by little girls. Maybe their jobs would be in jeopardy due to the waste of a lot of time and effort to come a conclusion. Proctor was able to come clean about his dirty past of sin in order to protect his good name, but Danforth and Hathorne don't want to accept defeat.

E. John Proctor finally grows a pair of balls and speaks up to the judge. Truly on of the most entertaining sense in the book. "i have made a bell of my honor! i have rung the doom of my good name - you will believe me, mr danforth! my wife is innocent, except she knew a whore when she saw one!" Just soo perfect i couldnt be more proud of John.
C. I feel like im missing something with this bird. Why was it going after abigail? why was it "stretching out its claws". i just dont udner stand the significants other than the fact that abigail uses it to help her case.
A. i think everyone needs a better education in this town. They believe the stupid things and dont believe what actually makes sense.

Matthew Bourdon Mr. Thomas English 11 10/7/13 E. It is so easy to tell that Mary Warren is caught up in her testimony to Danforth and she is hesitant to say anything. “I – I used to faint because I – I thought I saw spirits.” (Page 1257) This is interesting and shows that Mary Warren is nervous and wants to tell the truth but is afraid. I think she is definitely afraid of Abigail and what Abigail could do to her. Mary Warren is a weak-minded individual and this shows through her talking to Danforth. With Parris also putting the pressure on her to show the court how she fakes her fainting, was not helping her situation by any means either. B. The text that is significant in the story is that of Danforth to Abigail. “Child, I do not mistrust you” (Page 1258) Is everyone this scared of Abigail? All this evidence that has been provided and Danforth still says that he trusts Abigail over the majority of the people. Shame on him! This is the reason why the Judicial System at that time was so corrupt because the people of the court did not base their decisions of right and wrong through evidence, they based it off of opinion. This shows and makes it seem as if Abigail isn’t going to get caught easily. I. I agree with Marvin on his comment that Abigail is very manipulative. She is just so unaffected by all this chaos and honestly it is amazing how well she can control her composure. In the book, it stated that while Mary was talking to Parris and Danforth, Abigail was giving Mary a cold stare and is staring at her remorselessly. This shows how evil Abigail really is as a character. Abigail can be classified as a static character because she remains this manipulative and evil character from beginning to end.

E. A particular part of the reading that I enjoyed was why everyone was so oblivious to the fact that Abigail is a conniving little demon. She can manipulate the courts and judges into thinking that she is innocent while also getting away with being with John Proctor even though he admitted to their affairs. This made me feel interested to keep reading because the story is getting very twisted and it is difficult to keep up with.
I. To answer Michael Adams question about why John Proctor accuses Mr. Dansforth of being with the devil is because we are getting to a point of the story where everyone is just accusing each other and they don’t even care anymore. They feel as if they themselves are getting threatened by everyone else so they have to lash out and fight back.
C. I was a little confused with the bird scene. I just didn’t understand it the whole time. Was the bird indicating something about Abigail or what? I’m not sure if I just skipped right over this part and didn’t understand it but I need help.

Mr. Thomas

E. on Page 1257, Mary Warren says “It’s not a trick! … I-I used to faint because I-I thought I saw spirits.” This quote clearly resembles the stupidity still exemplified by a few people. After 3 and a half acts, (who knows how much actual time has passed in the story), and countless opportunities to truly understand the reasoning behind these idiotic acts, and never realizing that they are so blatantly false. It truly shows their ignorance to something that’s staring them in the face.
A. Today, in class, a lot of people referred to how this story is simply an example of extreme behavior, ridiculing people with almost no thought put into it. That’s exactly what is wrong with our society today. We label quiet kids as losers, obese kids as quitters, and less privileged people as less superior. Yet, the quiet kids always have the greatest ideas, the obese kids truly know the definition of hard work, and the less priviledged kids know it all; from the struggle for food, to the struggle for harmony in their house. We do this with almost no reasoning behind them. So…. What makes our society any different then theirs?
D. On the bottom of the page of 1261, when Danforth says, “You’ll confess yourself or you will hang” It really resembles the theme of the whole story, again, the ignorance. And quite frankly, the stupidity of some people. Sometimes the world never changes… until someone great comes along.

A. In this reading, the entire court scene can relate to some of my views in life. At home in my household, my mom knows I’m lying even if she doesn’t flat out tell me. She knows the truth no matter how hard I try to hide it. Abigail is hiding the truth and is still getting away with this. Can it be possible that she thinks she is getting away with it, but really isn’t? She reminds me of myself when I keep secrets, but she really keeps this going and this brings even more of my interest in the story.
D. John Proctor is really getting his say here in the court. He is making his argument loud and clear. I really am enjoying this scene, especially when John pretty much violates Abigail. On page 1259, John really demonstrates how angry he can get when he is arguing with Abigail. He says, “But it is a whore’s vengeance, and you must see it; I set myself entirely in your hands.” I really find this kind of confusing because to me, he is kind of giving away that he had some type of relations with her. He is basically saying that she is out for revenge because he left her. As I was reading, I thought it was going to affect his argument in court.
I. I really enjoyed today’s discussion in class because we spoke about the different characters and different situations going on. As I read the responses of my classmates, I would like to point out that Danny O’ Keefe’s answer. I have similar feelings toward Mary Warren. I really like how it seems she has changed and is finally standing up for herself, than she continues on in the lying again. What is making this woman continuously lie??? I don’t understand?? Maybe it is to get back at John Proctor.

Dj Mat Mr. Thomas English 11 10/7/13
E. It is amazing to me how some people can believe Abigail so easily. She is making excuse after excuse and trying ways to cover up that she has been lying to them this entire time. At one point she says "I have been hurt, Mr. Danforth; I have seen my blood runnin’ out! I have been near to murdered every day because I done my duty pointing out the Devil’s people - and this is my reward? To be mistrusted, denied, questioned like a" and Danforth says "Child, I do not mistrust you." Its like the higher ups in this colony are being strung around like a little girl and they are just letting her. In a way it is kind of sad and pitiful.
B. At this point all the truth is coming out and some people are being caught in their lies. Proctor tells the court about Abigail in the forest dancing with the girls at night and how Parris saw them. Parris tries to cover it up but he can not lie in court: Proctor, taking it right up: Proctor, at once: Mr. Parris discovered them himself in the dead of night! There’s the “child” she is!/ Danforth - it is growing into a nightmare, and he turns, as-tonished, to Parris: Mr. Parris /Parris: I can only say, sir, that I never found any of them naked." He is afraid to tell the court the truth because he knows he will get in trouble.
A line that i liked was "She thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is promise in such sweat. But it is a whore’s vengeance, and you must see it; I set myself entirely in your hands.” because this is kind of the point where Proctor is telling the truth about him and Abigail. This kinda shows that that this part of the story truly is where the truth comes out and eeryone finds out about everything that is happening and has happened within Salem.

Michael Annunziata Mr. Thomas English 11 10/8/13 A. In my opinion fooling someone is probably the worst sign of disrespect there can possibly be. For example, if I tell someone that I really like him or her as a friend but I don’t really mean that I would be fooling that person terribly. That person would gets his hopes up and be excited and trust that I have that persons back, but in my eyes it would be the complete opposite. Sibling rivalry I believe refers too lying to your parents, which my brother and I have done multiple times. One time my brother broke the door handle when no body was home, and so he blamed it on me and I winded up getting into a lot of trouble. C. After reading this part in the play I was very curious of the fact that Proctor was saying that he saw the devil and that Dansforth was also helping the devil. But afterwards I them realized that proctor is only doing this because he is proving that he will climb mountains just to get his wife Mary free from the acquisition of her being a witch and her talking to the devil. I. I one hundred percent agree with Sean De los Santos is answer to letter E because this is shows that Proctor will do anything in his power just to save his wife. I mean he was trying to prove his point that there were no witches but I guess he changed his mind to jut save his wife and not any of his friends wife’s
