D.) “Before the middle of the nineteenth century, there were no systems of public education. Not really. I mean, you could get educated by Jesuits if you had the money.” How do you like them apples, public education?
I.) On a more serious note, and although I normally abstain from discussing this unless someone else is about to experience something similar, I have been diagnosed with ADD and am being medically treated for it, and there are so many things that should be cleared up. Firstly, although diagnosing such a thing is indeed iffy, not everyone with an ADD diagnosis simply has a trigger-happy doctor and is in fact free from any disorder. The debate doesn’t arise when someone says ADHD is a genuine disorder. No reputable professional truly disputes that. What’s disputed is the diagnosing of ADHD and the treatment of ADHD. Which leads to the next part: stimulants to treat ADHD do not result in pill-popping zombies. They’re stimulants. Like coffee. No matter who you are, you’ll almost certainly be more attentive on a stimulant designed to treat ADHD than you would be off it. And, no, they’re not simply dangerous in that they cause health problems. The main concern (especially with Adderall) is abusing the drug, which is more-than-possible as someone gains tolerance to it over an extended period of use. Ideally, this treatment isn’t used unless it evidently becomes a serious problem. My family didn’t see about getting a formal diagnosis until I almost flunked out of sixth grade, and both my academic performance and interest in school skyrocketed after being treated. It got the job done. ADHD treatment is young, so, of course, it’s not pretty. But this is doing more good than harm as is, and there are more than enough reasons to allocate research into it as one would any other disorder. Undermining the problem by claiming it’s a fabrication to justify the current system does nothing but lead the uninformed person who wants change in the wrong direction.
C.) Alright, the education system is outdated. So… How do we go about changing that?

Michael Annunziata Mr. Thomas English 11 11,14,13 A. I agree with this because I have a friend at Xavier who has ADD and takes pills to help him stay focused in class. As you know I am not the best listener myself so I asked if I can try one of the pills to see if it can help me pay more attention in class. Sure enough it did not help me. I found out that instead of just listening to a teacher speak all day in class. It would be much more helpful if I worked in groups because it forces you to pay attention to what you are doing. C. This video really did make me think so much and pretty much second guess our education. Some things that I wonder is why is school only based on being successful in life and making money. Can’t school also help you make new friends which can also make you more successful in life because if you make the friends with the right person, that person can help you out and give you a job if they are successful and own a company. I feel like there are so many reasons why school helps us kids and its not just to make money. E. one thing that I really enjoyed about this video was when he started to question ADD itself. He said that it is still debatable. But if it is debatable then why are the kids who have “ ADD” allowed to take pills for it. Isn’t that an unfair advantage. I enjoyed this because it gave me a good conversation to talk about.

Classroom Discussion I was going to comment on what DJ said in class about how technology can affect a person's way of learning. I didn't like the way the narrarator blamed everything on technology. To many people, the use of technology is very important and crucial for a person to do well in school. To many people, technology is their way of learning. For example, many students at Xavier use their Ipads to take notes instead of writing it all in their notebooks. Is that an example of tecnology hurting one's education. People have different ways of studying and doing well in scholl. If this is one way people do well in school, then they should continue doing so and not let this video criticize them and make them feel low.

Joel Rodriguez Mr. Thomas English 11 November 14, 2013 Changing Education Paradigms A. I relate to his perspective of school being modeled on the idea of a factory. Students including me spend six hours a day in a building where you are told where to go and when to go on a schedule and a bell. Kids are separated by age instead of by skill. And all students are forced to learn certain subjects, which is like stopping by stations of an assembly line. I remember in my old school when I was in second grade my teacher said I was able to skip two years based on my grades but the school system would not allow that. D. In the video it is mentioned that education system is for a different age, and I agree with this quote. Even though we are making breakthroughs in science quicker than ever kids aren’t as motivated to learn, and this is mainly because kids are forced to learn a certain way. Kids like in most aspects of their lives are dictated how to learn, and the problem with this is that it leads to standardization how he said. Everyone is different and should learn what would benefit them most at their own pace. I think it’s about time that there is a education reformation. I. I agree with Sean that school is mainly preparing us to make money. Yes money is good but our goals in going to school shouldn’t be so that we can get money. Our goal in going to school is so we can learn what we need to to be the best at our field of work. If you want to become a biologist, you should take biology to become the best biologist, and as a result you would get a lot of money.

George Baroudos Mr. Thomas English 11 17 November 2013
A – The narrator is right when he says that ADHD is on the rise. I know so many kids on Adderall and riddelen its honestly mind blowing. The kids I know on these ADHD medications are normal kids who on man levels are incredibly intelligent. It is just difficult to concentrate with all of the distractions. I know kids who have learning disabilities and take them daily and I know kids who just take them for tests. It is honestly mind blowing that it has grown so vastly.
D – “They say we should raise standards” and that is regarding education. Our parents’ school life, if they finished, would leave them with a job in more cases then in our life. It is such a difficult job market today and no one knows how long they’ll actually keep their own job. So many people are laid off and it isn’t fair. We do not have a great education system that we once did that would reassure the children going to school. This is the reason I will most likely end up becoming my own boss hopefully. It is so difficult to work under someone else in my opinion and plus you are at risk of losing your job, eliminate both and become your own boss.
I – The fact that modern day education is based on the enlightenment is shocking in my opinion. The Enlightenment has had such an affect on America it is ridiculous. It stems from the writers like Irving that we spoke about in class to modern day education. The Enlightenment forced everyone in its path to think. But is thinking always a good thing? I believe that it can be sometimes and sometimes it is deadly. The Enlightenment I’m guessing pushed out old schooling systems that my parents had. If that is the case then it backfired greatly. Knowledge is power and learning is essential, but in order to live we need revenue. Revenue comes from a job and if we don’t have a job what can we do?

I. If education is thought about in a way of divergent thinking would apply realistic meaning? they talk about this paper clip and everyone thinks of a little metal rod. When they start changing this clip and making out of different things and changing the characteristics of its purpose would change but so would it identity no? I completely understand the thought about people thinking more out of the box but in a way u have a concept of reality that plays a major role in the thought process.
a. I thought the video was excellent. I was diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, and Dyslexia at going in to 6th grade and the doctor immediately started to medicate me. This medications made me feel not my self, almost not around. I love the way my mind thinks and how it can jump from topic to topic with a moments rest. Of course the medication helped my grades but it didnt help me as a person. I wasnt confronting the problem of me having these problems i was avoiding them. Almost blocking them out from my life, pretending like i didnt have them. I also believe a major reason why i have such problems is because of the amount of technology out these days. As sated in the video people are flooded with so much activity and liveliness 24/7, so when its time to stare at a board it can seem like staring at paint dry and as human always needing this activity it becomes easier to think about something else.
e. I dont personally agree with the education system now because of the thought of just pushing a kid along with out people having a major grasp on materiel. You think of the mid-term where most kids our age stay up 18 hours a night just to memorize information that will be forgot the next day in anticipation for the next exam/ term. The grouping system by age is understandable in a sense that you have a better way of organizing who going to college or who's gonna be more successful. If you start to group people by their abilities in test taking and overall grade there could be a more understandable experience. These people who may not make the cut to step up to a more difficult version of school can stay and learn more. Maybe developing a better way of school instead of listing it by year but more like an open involvement where teachers have a better relationship with the kids

Marvin Etienne Mr. Thomas English 11 13 November 2013 A. I can agree with this speech completely because he is giving information that everyone needs to hear. We are in a new age, where you can learn from technology around you. The system of schooling we have is centuries old and needs to be adjusted. I myself feel that school is really robotic and flat. Its the same thing every single day, year in and year out. It would be nice to actually have learning be fun and enjoyable. I want to learn interesting things that capture my attention. Another good point that this speech brings up is that there is a common mis perception that people with a degree are smart and people without degrees are intellectually incompetent. You need a degree to essentially get a job to make money, but that does not mean you're brighter than the next man. C. This video brought up many questions in my mind. Why hasn't anyone noticed that the system of learning we have today is defunct and outdated? Everything around us evolves in some way shape or form, but it seem that school has remained that same for what seems forever. I believe that school puts me in the mindset that I will work my entire life and then die after working for my lifetime. E. I loved how the video was set up. The drawings were very cool. I think that him drawing it out is an example of how to make school more interesting. Honestly, if I were to have read that entire speech on black and white, I would have fallen asleep. The drawings kept me interested with what he was saying.
