Chapters 27-29
As I read these three chapters I really enjoyed how the plot thickens and how Huck always has to face these problems. The one thing I like a lot about the first chapter is when Huck hides the money in the coffin. I found this humorous and I do not understand why he could not find another place to hide it. It is funny how he then debates whether to ask Mary Jane to dig up her fathers died body just to see if his money is there. I wonder how someone in today’s days would act? I do not understand why though he is so worried about if Duke and Dauphin have the money.
One question that I have in this chapter is how does Huck know that the family will re-connect in two weeks? Is he all the sudden a mind reader and can look into the future? I think (before reading chapter 29) that this is just one of his other lies. He was put into a situation were he must tell the truth and he probably lied to her as he always does, typical Huck.
After reading chapter 29, I am very confused in the first few stories Huck tells us. Why is it such a big deal to why Harvey Williks were delayed? This was very confusing to me. But something more important that caught my attention was the perseverance to prove that Duke and Dauphin were frauds. We see Huck in the beginning of the story look up to these two people and now they are nothing to him. Huck has finally realized that these were bad people and maybe he noticed he was becoming them with all of his lies. This can be a huge turn in the book, and can change the personality of the main character.

A. When the king and duke find out that the gold is missing they immediately go to Huck and ask him if he had taken the gold or if he knew anything about who took the gold. Huck tells them that he saw the slaves go into their room. This was a smart plan because they had just sold the slaves, so there was no way of them finding out if this is true or not, but it is also racist on Huck’s part. He uses the black slaves as scapegoats to not get caught and even though he did it to protect himself I still feel that it shows the racism that has been infused in Huck.
D. I enjoyed the scene where Huck is devising a plan with Mary Jane to help him escape with Jim and at the same time expose the king and duke for the fraud they committed against the family and the deceased Peter Wilks. This scene not only shows Huck’s morality, but it also shows how smart he is because he decided to include one of the sisters in the plan so that she could clear up the situation later on, which is why I enjoyed this scene in the chapter.
E. Just as Huck was about to execute his plan the real brothers show up from England. This messes up his plan because they have to now prove who are the real brothers since the king and duke claimed that the other ones were the frauds. They are then tested to see who is the real relative and to do that they must reopen the coffin where Peter is, which is where Huck’s plan falls apart. They find the gold and Huck must run since they have been found out. He runs to the raft where Jim is and tries to run but the king and duke catch up to him and get on. I wonder what will happen in the next chapter since the king and duke know that Huck betrayed them and wanted to give them up.

Sean de los Santos Mr. Thomas English 11: American Lit 6 January 2014 Huck Finn Discussion Board: 27-29 H. In this part of the book. I would have many different funny and serious actors play each of the characters. First of all it would be set up on a poorly made funeral scene with the Duke and the Dauphin and raggedy clothes while the actual Uncles are in very nice clothes. The Duke and the Dauphin would have funny comical dirty teeth and overalls while the real uncles would wear suits and ties. Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell would play the Duke and Dauphin while English Comedians Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise would play the real uncles. D. One Line I liked in this set of Chapters was when Mary Jane tells Huck Finn that, “ If I don’t ever see you again, I shan’t never forget you and I will think of you a many and a many a time, and I’ll pray for you to.(167)” I really loved this scene because it was a heargt warming moment to find someone who actually really likes Huck for who he is. It is probably hard for someone like Huck to find someone that likes him, but Mary Jane gives us a clue that she might’ve had some feelings for him. E. One Action I really thought was brave was Huck Finn telling Mary Jane the whole truth. I think this was a scene where Huck was finally using his conscience. He actually felt terrible with the fact that these guys are fooling these three orphans and he is actually contradicting his old value where he wants to be a bad guy. I think he truly wants to be a good guy for the rest of his life.

Eoin Tunney Mr. Thomas English 11 6 January 2014
D. One thing that surprised me in this reading was the fact that the duke and king actually believed Huck when Huck told them that the salves had stolen the gold. This really shows how stupid these two con artists are. I would think that it would have been easily noticeable if one of the slaves was holding $6,000. This scene also shows that king and duke have no trust in Huck and also shows us that Huck is a pretty liar himself.
E. I thought it was pretty funny that the actually brothers of Peter Wilk showed up just before the two scammers were going to leave. It was definitely the worst possible timing for these two, but it unfortunately screwed up Huck’s plan. Also I feel bad for Huck since the king and duke know that he tried to screw them over. It was also extremely unfortunate that the king and duke showed up to the raft just as Huck thought he was free from them.
A. These reading from the past two nights are starting to show us what type of person Huck actually is. In earlier chapters Huck seemed more mischievous and also seemed like he would be causing loads of trouble. Now it seems like Huck is becoming extremely mature especially since he his devising this plan that will expose the scammers while also giving the $6,000 back to the girls. This plan really shows us how much Huck has matured because of the lessons he learned from the widow.

Joseph Roperti Mr. Thomas English 11 6 January 2014 A. the part where The King realized that the Gold was missing he immediately blamed Huck. Huck tries to find a scapegoat with the slaves but can't resolve the underlying problem of racism. With this stereotype it is impossible to get past that barrier of the african american person as the culprit. As ones mind is set on racism from the time of their birth. D. Relating to my first comment it really shocked me on how the duke as well as the King be levied him in his lie about the slaves stealing the Gold. I don't see how that both men could not notice a slave having gold, but it all traces back to the mindset of that society. They were blinded by racism to see what was really going on E. Something I thought that was very courages of huck was telling Mary Jane what really happened. from this I think it shows how Huck wants to be a better guy and have morals. With his old ways and habits it makes him a corrupt man and enables his decision making to slip from those that would be moral.

John Marano Mr. Thomas English 11 6 January 2014 C. I really don’t understand how the con artists are continuing to get away with all these schemes. They are literally exposed in front of a mob of people, yet they aren’t proven to be true “frauds”. I don’t understand how much longer they can create these lies and talk their way out of trouble. Another thing that kind of confused me was when Huck escapes. Why is he escaping now in the heat of everything? I just feel like this is the worst time to leave. I know that Huck is so smart in his attempts to get away, but how does he get caught? He seems to be set with his canoe and Jim, yet he is still caught. HOW? ? E. In chapter 27, I had a very “good” reaction towards Huck’s actions when the king questions him. The king kind of knows that Huck is up to something because there is no other person aware of the schemes they are pulling. I really enjoyed how Huck immediately devises a lie to save himself. As we know, Huck is a good liar, but he tries to restrain from lying. I feel that when he lies, he is reminded of his father. So the fact that he is able to create a lie about how the slaves stole his money really helps him. Who knows what would have happened if the duke and King found out he was really going against them. It amazes me how Huck still continues to journey with them, but his lie helps his situation. I. I would like to point out that I completely agree with how Sean de los Santos explains the conversation between Huck and Mary Jane. I really like this scene and how Sean pointed it out because for the first time we are beginning to see some true, positive emotions from Huck. Mary Jane also demonstrates feelings for Huck and explains how she will never forget him. I really enjoyed this because as Huck continues to grow, he is experiencing more things in life. Love is something that all people eventually come across in life and it comes unexpected. For the first time we see true feelings. I didn’t think we ever would.

Frank Clarke Mr. Thomas English 11 January 6, 2014
B. The relationship between Huck and Mary Jane is kind of interesting. What does Huck view her as? A mother, sister, possibly romantically? We’ve seen many sides of Huck, but this would be the first involving someone on the opposite sex. Or if he views her as a mother figure, that’s a first for that too. We’ve discussed possible father figures for Huck. However, I think it’s more of a motherly relationship, because on page 186 he says “Miss Mary Jane, is there any place….etc” He describes her as “Miss”
D. “A couple of nigger-traders come along, and the king sold them the niggers reasonable, for three-day drafts as they called it, and away they went, the two sons up the river to Memphis, and their mother down the river to Orleans.” This shows a really ruthless side of the King, In class today we talked about whether or not the King had morals, and in this sense he doesn’t. Yes, morals are different for everyone, but if you purposefully sell slaves knowing they’d be broken up you are the cruelest of cruel (not saying buying or purchasing slaves is any less wretched)
A. These chapters are really a battle of wits, and Huck is just on the sidelines enjoying the show. Heck, he might even enjoy see the crowd cry out for both the King’s and Duke’s death. The kind of left us with a cliffhanger at the end, when Huck was about to leave but all of a sudden he sees the Duke and dauphin. We’ll see what happens!

Matthew Chan Mr. Thomas English 11 6 January 2014
I. I agree with what Emmanuel said about how Huck was racist when he blamed the slaves for taking the gold. I think Huck is beginning to know and understand the meaning of racism and he is becoming one himself. This can be a continuation of racism as we have previously saw in the previous day’s reading where they change Jim. I find racism to be a key point throughout this book and may be continuing until the end of the story. E. I was surprised that Huck told Mary Jane about their plan and how everything was a lie. Why would you tell her though? I understand Huck really likes her but things can happen. If I was Huck, I would not have told anyone and instead of hanging around the town with the King and Duke, I would have quickly left without anyone knowing. C. What will happen next? I am very curious what will happen next because the lies have finally come to an end. Now that they are all together again, I wonder what will happen especially what will the King and Duke do to Huck for lying and for being the one taking the gold?

George Baroudos Mr. Thomas English 11 6 January 2014
A - Huck feels this comfort and this freedom when he believes himself and Jim are all alone again. The Duke and King have authority over Huck and limits his freedoms in some senses. Huck is relieved when they are gone though. Once Huck hears their voices his heart drops. He wanted to follow his and Jim’s plan until the end. The duke and king took them on a detour. But they were back at it and of course it was ruined.
D – “Quick sales and small profit!” (178). I really like this quote because this acknowledges expansion. Every big time business starts off small. No one can expect to jump into business and make it big instantly. I like the stories on the road to riches that comes with a story of struggle first. Those who just inherit big businesses have not been through the struggle or the expansion. They can just take over the reigns. I enjoy a struggle to prosperity story. You learn through experience.
I - As we said today in class, you can take the boy out of the hood but you cannot take the hood out of the boy. That instinct that we grow up with does not leave us. The racism that Huck grows up with allows him to point out the vulnerable. The vulnerable people being the slaves who did nothing wrong but . Huck ultimately acknowledges the negative connotation brought to African Americans and he exploits it. Huck criticizes the Duke and King for being liars, but he is doing the same. Every time we mention Huck trying to move forward from his past he takes two steps back.

C. What confused me about Chapters 27-29 is why Huck is still with the Duke and the Dauphin. He knows that what they are doing is wrong and constantly tries to fix it, I just don’t understand why he is still with them. What also confused me is why the Duke and the Dauphin have the power to sell the house and the slaves.
D. What I liked about these chapters is that Huck felt bad for the girls and how the Duke and the Dauphin stole $6,000 from them. I like how every chapter he progresses as a person and that something that Huck usually wouldn’t care about earlier in the book now gets to him. It shows how much this adventure has changed him.
E. I’m really glad that the Duke and the Dauphin were caught and that the money was found, I was beginning to get sick of them and I found it annoying how almost everyone continued to fall for their tricks. All I want is for Jim and Huck to continue on the journey and leave the Duke and Dauphin behind.

A. I like how Huck slipped the money into Peter Wilk’s coffin. I thought it was smooth and he got done what he intended from the last chapter. I feel though as if later someone will find the money and come to discover that it was Huck. C. The only thing I didn’t understand was how The Dauphin came to sell the Wilk’s house. Like was it his call to do so or did he just do it to make money and then run. It boggles me how easy he did it too, like he didn’t discuss it with anyone and didn’t care to worry about the consequences or anything. I. I would like to agree with George Baroudos’ comment on the discussion of today in class. The notion that you can take the boy out of the hood but you cannot take the hood out of the boy. I believe this is completely true because where you originate stays with you and never leaves. Who you are and your personality really can’t change especially after an old enough age.

Matthew Bourdon Mr. Thomas English 11 1/6/14 B. I found it very interesting how even after the real Harvey and William Wilks return, the King and the Duke still do not get into trouble and the mob of people want to kill all four of the men. “The whole bilin’ of ‘m’s frauds! Le’s duck’ em! Le’s drown ‘em! Le’s ride ‘em on a rail!” (Page 201) It is interesting as to why the crowd/ mob of people decided to go against both the real Harvey and William just because Ab Turner and his pard said that they did not see no tattoo. This shows how violent the society was back then and how the crowd did not even give the real brothers a chance to really prove themselves. When are these two con artists going to get caught?! A. I related the separation of the slave family to today’s discussion in class about racism. It is clearly sad and heart-breaking how something of this nature can occur due to the foolishness and wrongdoing of the Duke and the King. “they cried around each other, and took on so it most made me sick to see it. I can’t ever get it out of my memory, the sight of them poor miserable girls and … hanging around each other’s necks and crying;” (Page 182). This was a very sad moment and shows that even someone like Huck who is a racist himself, realizes the cruelty and the sadness of what is being done to these people for no absolute reason. I. I agree with John Marano’s comment on the King and the Duke. It makes me so angry to see that they have not been apprehended for their wrong doings.

Michael Annunziata Mr. Thomas English 11 1,7,14 a. I really enjoyed the last couple of readings we have had. One thing that I can make a good connection with and that I have been very pleased with has been Huck’ personality. Huck has turned from being a immature and very adventurous kid to a mature kid. I mean that is what you expect from a person as you grow up but the way he just hanged so drastically so quickly is just amazing. I can make a connection to this because it reminds me of myself. I used to be and still am irritating but I feel that just like huck I have grown up to overcome most of it. C. one thing that I am extremely confused with while reading this book, is how the con artist keep getting out of trouble. They lie all the time and always find a way to not get in trouble. It makes no sense to me because there is evidence that they are frauds but they never get in trouble. That is one thing that confused me while reading this part of the book. D. one thing that I really like when reading this part of the book is how Huck progresses as a person. He cares for people and even feels terrible for the girls who Duke stole the money from. It shows that he is growing up and what kind of a person he is becoming.

Matthew Segarra Mr. Thomas English 11 8 January 2014
A. In these chapters we see Huck start to act on his own, without the influence of authority. For example, he steals the money on his own. He is also doing things to benefit others, not just himself. He does all this to help Jim. He is also trying hard to escape from the King and the Duke, he wants nothing to do with them and has voiced his disgust with them. E. I liked how Huck turned the table on the King and the Duke. He stole their money and stashed it away where they would not find it. He conned the con men themselves. I think this was a very cunning move by Huck; the fact that he got away with stealing all their money makes me chuckle. I tip my hat to Huck. I. I do not agree with Emmanuel saying that Huck is racist. Huck blames the slaves because they have already been sold and there is nothing that the King and Duke can do. Also, it is believable because they were racist and think that the slaves were evil, Huck was just being smart, not racist.
