D. I enjoyed the scene where Huck is trying to explain to Tom that he is in fact alive and that he is not a ghost like Tom thinks Huck is. This scene was enjoyable because it shows how dumb Tom could be as well as how stubborn he is because he did not want to believe that Huck was actually alive.
E. When Huck tells Tom of his plan to try to steal Jim he agrees eagerly, much to Huck’s surprise. Huck thought that Tom would put up more of a fight because he considered Tom a moral person, but Huck proved himself wrong. He tries to tell him that he just wants to take Jim, get on the raft and run, but Tom wants to make things more complex.
B. I think that Tom wanting to make the plan more complicated will just make helping Jim more difficult. This to me shows that Tom doesn’t actually care about Jim and just takes the whole thing as a game because he even compares it to the adventure books he reads. This is why I feel that Tom will ultimately complicate the plan and make it have negative results for Huck and Jim.

George Baroudos Mr. Thomas English 11 26 January 2013
A - I enjoyed the scene when Tom and Huck reunite. They exchange stories and I love that. When we listen we learn the most. They have missed each other and they will tell them they’re past endeavors and that reminds me of my own relationships. Often times when my friends and I go out we share the events of the week. They have been separated for a long time so I can only imagine how much it means reminiscing. It is tough being separated from your best friend, it honestly is. But that first connection after being separated is magnificent. Those moments is what I live for.
D - “It warn’t no use to say anymore; because when he said he’d do a thing, he always done it.” (236). Someone who is that consistent is both a good and bad thing. When executing the good stuff it is important to always do it. If everybody always did the right thing the world would be perfect. Fortunately we do not live in a perfect world, but who would want to live in a perfect world? That consistency can be a bad thing if you are always executing the wrong behavior. There has to be a middle ground, no one always does the right thing. But we have to try, we have to try for ourselves and also for the world. We can make a difference.
I – In the past we have analyzed the difference between Tom and Huck. Tom is very adventurous and seems to always try and take the harder road. Huck is more of a get to the point type of guy. I believe that both Huck and Tom are able of executing their plans. It just varies on the path they choose to take. Tom Sawyer creates scenarios in his head that will never happen. He wants to prove himself, but for what? Huck just wants to free Jim and that’s what separates them.

C. I have some questions for this reading. Is this plan actually going to be successful? I really am curious to see if Jim will finally be seen as a free individual with the help of Huck. Also, is Tom actually trying to help and how much longer will they be able to play off their disguises? I am also just confused on the stupidity of the new “owners” of Jim. I mean he basically yells out to Huck and Tom and they make an excuse to protect their identities. How do they manage to pull that off? It’s beyond me. D. A quote that really stood out to me during my reading was from chapter 34. “Tom told me what his plan was…and would make Jim just as free a man as mine would, and maybe get us all killed besides.” This greatly grabbed my interest because it shows that they really want this plan to work even if it means being killed. Although it seems like a positive thing to help with this plan, this quote also shows how Huck subverts to whatever Tom says. Huck knows it probably isn’t the smartest idea considering they have a good chance at being killed, yet he decides to follow along. It kind of annoys me because Huck was finally growing independent and smarter by himself along his journey. Now that Tom is in the picture, I have a bad feeling because I feel like Tom will have a negative influence on Huck. I really hope that Huck can continue to use his better knowledge when he makes decisions. I. I want to point out that George had a really great point in his discussion answers, but I must say that I disagree. George says that he enjoyed the reunion of Tom and Huck. He gives an explanation of how they began to catch up on some things and this shows how much they missed each other. I really think this was such a relief for Huck considering he has been on such a lonely and tiring journey. I must say that I disagree that this is a good thing though. It might seem crazy, but I feel like something bad will happen. I don’t see how Tom can have a good influence on Huck and we even saw that in the beginning of the story. I feel like Huck has been doing such an extraordinary job finding his inner self but he will be distracted and led onto bad things now that Tom is in the picture. I know Tom is doing well by wanting to help with Jim’s escape; I just have a funny feeling.

D. “Well, I let go all holts then, like I was shot.” What’s going on here is that Huck is shocked that Tom Sawyer agreed to help him get Jim out of imprisonment. Huck quickly defended his reasoning because he knew Tom was a moral person, and believed in the social norms of that time. However, it was much different that he expected, Tom said little to nothing and was on board right away!
B. This entire idea of getting Jim out is pretty necessary and a good plot twist. Once this happens, we see that towards the end of the book the true friendships that formed and the true people that are within, come out. Throughout the whole book we see little bits and pieces of each character, along with their flaws, but now we see them as wholes and who they had made out to be.
E. Although Tom eagerly wanted to help, his extensive plan may seem foolish, or the exact opposite. Maybe Tom cares so much that he mad such an extensive plan, or maybe he thinks that this is all a game and pokes fun at Huck and Jim in a subtle way. The only way to find out is by reading the end of the story! This is really just a set up for the coming chapters!

C. What is the significance of Tom Sawyer coming back to the story? I think Tom could be like “God” in a way. When Huck needs to figure out a way to help Jim escape, Tom Sawyer comes along. Not only does Huck see Tom but he sees his friend, someone who he knows and can trust. Both of them are going to figure out a way to get Jim out. Huck and Jim can catch up with each other and can spend time with each other like the good old days. A. I found it funny where Huck sees Tom Sawyer on the road and stops him. When Tom sees Huck, he thinks it is a dream or a ghost since he thought he was dead. The reaction from Tom was hilarious because he hasn’t seen him for a little while. I think some people would have the same reaction as Tom in today’s world when we haven’t seen someone for a while. We would either think they might have passed away or moved away. E. I liked the way Huck told Tom his idea on how to free Jim. However, even though Huck thought of a great idea, Tom thought it was too easy and that they need to slow it down a little bit. Of course Tom would say such a thing because he is a guy that likes to prolong things and wants to be adventurous. I hope that they will be able to get Jim out quickly and safely before something bad might happen because you never know with Tom back in the picture.

A. When Huck and Tom reunite it reminds me of when I am able to see my friend who moved out of state. I have a friend who moved to New Jersey so it’s difficult for me to see him as often as I normally do. When we are able to meet up it is a special occasion because we spend our time catching up and seeing how the other one is doing. This reminds me of Huck and Tom because the have been separated for so long and now they are back together. It may not be quite as similar of a relationship considering Tom thought Huck was dead but it still speaks to me that way. E. One scene that I liked was when the king and the duke were being run out of the town by the mob of townspeople. Although they were being brutalized it was nice to see them get what was coming to them. Obviously it could have done without that whole tar and feathering. However, they knew what the consequences could be if they were caught so they knew that this was a possibility. C. Why does Tom have to try to make things more difficult? Tom and Huck could have gotten Jim out of there so easily but for whatever reason they just had to make everything difficult. He even suggests that sawing off Jim’s leg would be a “nice touch”. In what world would you saw off a man’s leg if you don’t have to just because it’s more theatrical?

Eoin Tunney Mr. Thomas English 11 26 January 2014
E. I thought it was extremely funny that the king and duke were feathered and tarred after the people of the town in chapter 33 knew they were the con artists. Their cons finally backfired on these two, which probably couldn’t have come at a better time for Huck. Huck is most likely free from theses two idiots. Also if the two con men were any bit smart they would create a different way of conning people. Their stupidity eventually led to their fall.
D. I feel that Tom Sawyer’s plans to rescue Jim are extremely ridiculous. Huck wants to do everything easy and quick by going into the hut through the door, but Tom insists on doing everything like a person in an adventure book or movie would do. Tom is going to realize how hard it is going to be to dig their way into the hut. I feel like Tom’s complicated plan is a way off stalling all of Huck’s plans to get to the free state.
I. I thought Emmanuel Luna’s comments on the scene where Huck is explaining to Tom that he is actually alive. Just like Emmanuel said, this scene shows how stupid Tom really is, but it also shows how much Huck’s fake death fooled people. When Huck and Tom meet, Tom is shocked to see Huck and thinks that he is seeing a ghost. This shows that Huck fooled everyone and that no one would ever think that Huck’s death was actually fake.

Stephen Sgarlato Mr. Thomas English 11 1/27/14
A. The most touching point of the story that showed the true friendship Huck and Jim share is when they reconnect. They have been separated for so long and now they have the chance to share everything that has happened with each other. It was a great experience to read because it showed that even back then two people of racial difference where able to connect like they did. I. I would like to elaborate on Collin’s point about why they made Jims escape so theatrical. Like what was the purpose of thinking up ways to get him out. Yes I understand that it would create more of a story and probably a smoother get away but it is unnecessary and can be avoided. C. I don’t understand why when Tom Sawyer saw Huck on the road he didn’t say anything to him. Basically he just saw him, got scared because he hasn’t seen Huck in a while and then kept walking. It was an odd part to the story because they made like they didn’t even know each other when they used to be a big part of each other’s lives not too long ago.

C. What was the point of kissing "So Tom he thanked them very hearty and handsome, and let himself be persuaded, and come in; and when he was in he said he was a stranger from Hicksville, Ohio, and his name was William Thompson -- and he made another bow. Well, he run on, and on, and on, making up stuff about Hicksville and everybody in it he could invent, and I getting a little nervious, and wondering how this was going to help me out of my scrape; and at last, still talking along, he reached over and kissed Aunt Sally right on the mouth, and then settled back again in his chair comfortable, and was going on talking; but she jumped up and wiped it off with the back of her hand, and says:'You owdacious puppy!' He looked kind of hurt, and says: 'I'm surprised at you, m'am. You're s'rp -- Why, what do you reckon I am? I've a good notion to take and -- Say, what do you mean by kissing me?' He looked kind of humble, and says: 'I didn't mean nothing, m'am. I didn't mean no harm. I -- I -- thought you'd like it.' 'Why, you born fool!" She took up the spinning stick, and it looked like it was all she could do to keep from giving him a crack with it. "What made you think I'd like it?'" (Page 303). I was really confused by this because if you took this part away, it would not have done anything to the story. I felt like it just was there to add confusion and to be there to make the book longer. If you took it out, it would not have ruined the story.
D. I thought is was hilarious when Huck and Tom said that they will "We'll dig him out. It 'll take about a week!" (Page 313). The reason why I thought this was funny was because usually when you steal something, you want to make it quick and not have people discover it. In this case, the owners of the slaves can be found out that Huck and Tom are trying to steal Jim so that they can have a slave. I find this whole thing hilarious, simply because of the fact that people think of plans and they change, just as Tom's and Huck's did when the slave invited them to see the dog which was funny because it was not a dog at all, but Jim. I thought it was also funny that Tom wanted to follow all the books that he read, and make Jim a hero, instead of doing it quick and simply like regular robbers would want it done.
A. The sarcasm between Huck and Tom reminds me of the sarcasm my dad likes to give to our family. A perfect example of this sarcasm is "Why, to dig with. We ain't a-going to gnaw him out, are we?" (Page 323). My dad would say something around those lines if you put him into the situation. This sarcasm is hilarious and not mean at all. It also makes the situation for funny and less stern about stealing a n-word.

Osman Mat Mr. Thomas English 11 1/26/14
B. It is really strange how Huck feels guilty about what happened to Duke and King. Even thought they deserved what they got he still seemed to feel bad. In fact Huck even said "human beings can be awful cruel to one another" when the towns people covered them in tar and feathers. What the towns people did could have have been worse. Its hard to understand why Huck feels guilty. It is not exactly his fault. The con men had it coming and Huck did not plan for that to happen.
E. Tom is a real pain in the neck. Why would he want to approach something like getting Jim out in such a silly or even difficult manner. That kid is like a big bundle of surprises. He was the kid who wanted to have a gang to kill people in the beginning of the book but now he suddenly says that stealing is a bad thing. Oh that character is just so weird. He is not exactly the brightest and comes up with the weirdest ideas that would not work ever.
C. How did Mark Twain come up with this? We have read most of this story and has been pretty good with humor, but Tom is ridiculous. It is not even that i do not like the character it is just that i find him very stupid. If anyone knows what Mark Twain's inspiration for making the character Tom Sawyer please tell me because i really do not believe in his time there people like Tom.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn 33-35
E. I think the reason Tom Sawyer agreed to help Huck steal Jim back was because he knew there would be an adventure in doing so. It’s not surprising that Huck didn’t believe Tom at first because he was raised by society and was taught it was wrong to help a slave. But when they’re trying to come up with a plan to free Jim, instead of going with Huck’s plan that was simple and would get the job done, “Tom told me what his plan was, and I see in a minute it was worth fifteen of mine for style, and would make Jim just as free a man as mine would, and maybe get us all killed besides (pg.135).” Tom instead wanted to dig Jim out.
F. The reunion of Huck and Tom is allowed the book to pick up. With Tom in the picture Huck’s adventure has more risks and humor. For example, instead of using a door which is too mainstream for Tom they need to dig Jim out by sawing his leg off and baking a pie with a rope ladder in it, and purposely make a moat around the cabin and swim across it.
I. To answer Chan’s question on why Tom returned in the story, it’s just to make the story more interesting. Tom is a character that Twain uses to symbolize society, so Tom gives Twain the opportunity to make more criticize society. Also he make the story more humorous.

Matthew Bourdon Mr. Thomas English 11 1/27/14 B. We finally see the Duke and the King getting run out of town and hopefully out of the story for good! “and as they went by I see they had the king and the duke, though they was all over tar and feathers,” (Page 230). This is the happiest thing for me to know that the King and the Duke are done from being in the story. They were so annoying and mischievous that it just made me angry to read about them. It is pretty interesting as to why Huck says he feels bad for them when they put him and Jim through all this trouble. Huck has a good heart. F. We all knew that the return of Tom Sawyer into the story just meant more mischief and havoc throughout. Everything with Tom is always about how it is done in the books, and it is pretty pathetic at this point. “Why hain’t you ever read any books at all?... Who ever heard of getting a prisoner loose in such an old-maidy way as that? No; the way all the best authorities does is to saw the bed-leg in two (Page 238) I honestly have a feeling that this plan is going to become almost similar to a heist. I feel bad for Jim because of what he is going through but I have a feeling that he is going to be saved. Tom’s ridiculous ideas are what makes him a stand out character in the book. I. I agree with Joel’s comment on why Tom entered the story. Although everything he says sounds pathetic, the main reason that he entered back into the story was to make it more intriguing. Just the thought and ideas of Tom Sawyer are humorous in their own right.

Michael Annunziata Mr. Thomas English 11 Jan, 27, 14 A. One part of this reading that I can really connect to and that I really enjoyed was when Huck and Jim finally get back to each other and exchange stories with each other. This reminds me of when my best friend went away for 3 weeks in the summer to go to the REACH program. It was the summer of going into freshman year and I’ve known him since we were two years old and to be away from him for that like was just traumatizing. Once he came back and finally saw each other, we were so anxious to exchange stories just like Jim and Huck, and I could only imagine how hard it was for them to stay away for each other. B. It’s crazy how all this is forming and what’s more crazy is the plan Tom has to get Jim out. Although it is so complicated I feel that the plan is very good and that it’s going to work. One thing that I like is that now that it is late in the book it’s good to see how these friendships are forming and how they are “true” friends. C. One thing that I have questioned in this reading I why Tom Sawyer saw Huck walking and didn’t say a word to him. It’s almost as if he got scared because he hasn’t seen Huck in a while and then pretty much just walked away. This confused me so much.

Joseph Roperti Mr. Thomas english 11 A. there is one part that closely realties to a part of my life is that of Huck and Jim's relationship that is exhaling stories with each other. This is one of the only parts of the book that I can have an accutally connection with. THis connects to me in the way my friends and I act around each other. Even when all of us are separated by schools we make it must to see each other on the weekends and share new stories and experiences. B. I have a question on how this plan is gonna work and what is going to come from it if it does what will come from it. Will it give buck the ability to full view him as a free person or still have the mask of a slave. OR will it have the underlining affect of being "true friends" and not drawing them further apparent with everything else. I. I thought that my peer Mike's comment about the friendship and relationship of Huck and Fin can be made into a more broad statement that can relate to a lll of our peers in xavier. There is nothing better then coming back from summer vacation and seeing everybody back in school and sharing all of the good and memorable times of the summer.
