Matthew Chan Emmanuel Luna English 11 4 Feb. 2014 Pap’s Profile 1. Pap is Huck's father who does not care about his own son at all and only abuses him. He criticizes and gets mad at Huck for trying to get an education. He beats Huck because he thinks that he is trying to be better than him and he cannot stand the idea of anyone having more than he does. Huck is also a racist drunk and therefore influences Huck and his racism. He also takes Huck's money and even kidnaps him so that no one could arrest him for stealing his money and taking his son. At the end we find out that Pap has been dead since around the beginning of the book. 2. Pap is an abusive, racist drunk who cannot stand to see others being better than him, especially black people. He is a terrible father and a terrible man in general because he does not stand up for his son, runs away from his problems, and even takes his son's money. Him being drunk is also a weakness because he will never be able to obtain a better life because he spends it on alcohol and ends up arrested all the time. Pap stays the same throughout the novel and therefore is a static character. His racism never changes and neither does him being a drunk. 3. Likes: Dislike: alcohol Huck himself black people to run away from his problems educated people to make sure that Huck doesn't surpass him people with power (Thatcher) to take money from others, especially Huck religion 4. Important quotes: "They said he was a p'fessor in a college, and could talk all kinds of languages, and knowed everything" (27). This quote shows Pap's problem with people who are better than him and the fact that he does not want anyone to be better than him. He said this when he was talking about a black man he heard about who was very educated and successful. "but when they told me there was a state in this country where they'd let that nigger vote, I drawed out. I says I'll never vote ag'in" (27). Pap said this when he was describing the successful black man. This shows how racist and stupid Pap is because he is willing to not vote just because black men can vote in a state. "He took it and bit it to see if it was good, and then he said he was going downtown to get some whisky; said he hadn't had a drink all day" (21). This quote is Huck describing what Pap did, which was take his money, and then go get drunk in town. This shows that Pap is a slave to alcohol and will do whatever it takes to get money to feed his addiction.
I cannot upload the picture but here is the reason why we chose the picture- This picture is a great example of Pap because it shows the same characteristics as Pap does. Pap is always drunk and likes to drink alcohol. Pap also is not wealthy in money and always takes Huck’s money. Pap is also not the cleanest man and is very dirty. Not only that but Pap doesn’t care about anything at all. All he cares about is alcohol and himself.
