D. This story was interesting because of the mysterious aspect of who the hollow men might be. At the very beginning they are described as being stuffed and having their headpieces filled with straw. This gives the impression that they might be scarecrows, but if you analyze that closely it might actually be a way of comparing people who are unable to contribute much to society except for scaring things off, much like a scarecrow.
E. This story is also depressing and dark in many ways. One quote that helps show this is, “Those who have crossed with direct eyes, to death’s other Kingdom” This quote gives the whole story a very dark feeling right from the beginning because it is talking about death and despair. It also later goes on to say “in death’s dream kingdom” which leads me to believe that it is also focused on the human psyche, which is common for modernists.
C. In general I was confused by this reading and it was hard to understand. I had to read it over many times and still wasn’t able to fully understand the reading. It was hard to understand and the language used throughout made it that much harder to understand fully.

Michael Annunziata Mr. Thomas English 11 2/24/14 A. One example that I can make a connection too while reading this, was that the Hallow men could be anyone. With that being said yes in each section they do represent something else or someone else, but as many clues as they give u you still can’t make an interpretation on which they are exactly. I can make an example of this because I once had a baseball coach who I just couldn’t red. Everyday he would show me a different characteristic of himself and I just couldn’t figure out how to act back towards him, whether it was funny, joyful, angry, and strict of even serious he was just never consistent and he would always change. D. One thing that I liked a lot during reading this poem was that it was very descriptive. They let me make pictures in my mind and exactly what was going on. This was rare for me because I personally usually have trouble with understanding poems to its fullest but with this poem I had no problem understanding. Every sentence allowed me to make a picture in my mind about what was going on and it helped me so much and that is why I loved this poem. C. Although this poem was very easy to understand one thing that confused me a little bit was exactly who the Hallow men are. I picture them as old people with an all black dress coat with a round hat on. But I doubt that’s right.

A. What I liked about the story was the mystery that came with it. The biggest mystery to me was finding out who the “Hollow Men" were. Literally, they are described as scarecrows, but there is always an underlying meaning in poems. I feel like the “Hollow Men" were the people who lost everything and have nothing left. This poem takes place post World War 1 so there would be many loved ones lost. Personal possessions also could have been lost after raiding an area. Eliot says, “this is the dead land the cactus land" which could refer to a state of limbo; a bunch of people with nothing to live for, just sulking in their everyday lives.
D. This quote really struck me: “This is the way the world ends Not with a bang but a whimper." We live in a world where people are too caught up in media to realize their faults and the faults with the world. I feel like if the world were to end, we would all just give up and let it happen as opposed to trying to save it. We are too busy in our own worlds to envision the collapse going on around us, and once we see it, it will be too late. We seem to not care about our surroundings, only ourselves.
I. I also agree withvJohn when he says that the hollow men are intriguing. You can compare them to some people today. People that live their lives very apathetically. They live with no emotion and are “hollow" on the inside.
